Rovitch Florial (11) contestant in Book Week Pageant

Eight Oranje School pupils will compete in the school’s annual Book Week Pageant, which will be held at Philipsburg Cultural and Community Centre, this Sunday, March 4, from 2:00pm. The eight pupils will compete in five segments: Costume, Speech, Talent, Cultural Wear and Questions. There will also be entertainment by modelling group “Papa Umpu,” several singers and a dance group, among other acts.

Oranje School has been celebrating its annual Book Week event for more than 20 years. This is the time of year when a special emphasis is placed on reading. The regular classroom routine is put aside and pupils participate in various activities related to reading: Spelling Bees, Battle of Books and Book Report Contest.

This year’s theme is “One School, Many Cultures.” The school said the Book Week Committee had wanted to have an event in which pupils could showcase their talent, while demonstrating what they’d learned about the different countries and cultures, and the idea to have the pageant had been born. “The pupils were very interested and enthusiastic about the idea. An elimination process was held and now we’re down to our final eight,” the school said.

Contestant number five Rovitch Florial (11) said it had always been his dream to compete in a pageant. “I hope to fulfil my dreams. Reading is important, because it teaches different lessons and it broadens your imagination. My favourite book is Beauty and the Beast. I like this book, because it’s a fairytale that teaches you that beauty is not always on the outside,” he said. He will represent Saba.
