Air burner technology could be solution for waste

Commissioner of Environmental Affairs Bruce Zagers has termed his recent trip to Aruba to investigate the viability of Air Burner technology as “very fruitful,” and said applying the technology here is “definitely a solution that can work.”

While on Aruba, the commissioner was able to visit the operating company, which is also the regional representative, to see the unit in action. On Aruba the Air Burner technology is used to burn all sewage sludge on the island.

Commissioner Zagers said he was astounded by the immense heat produced as the fire box at its peak can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt a soda can.

The commissioner reiterated that while the end goal of the waste management plan is to promote recycling, this would be a clean solution for unrecyclable materials due to its high combustion temperature. Burning the remaining waste would also significantly extend the lifespan of the landfill. “The idea is one that will be pursued by the island territory and I hope that it can come to fruition,” stated the Commissioner.
