Project fibre optic cable Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Kitts nearly completed

In the past 2 weeks a special ship, the Intrepid rolled out the fibre optic cable between Saba, St. Eustatius and St.Kitts. In the next 4 weeks the work will be completed on the beaches and the islands.

RCN projectmanagers Nico Scheper and Werner Haan “The laying went smoothly. We only had two wait for 2 extra days because of much wind and high waves, but we are very pleased with the professionalism and cooperation of Aquatics and IT Telecom. We would like to thank all people involved for their commitment on this project, that is so important for the islands”.

The project also includes the connection of the cable  on St. Maarten.

Through an administrative LAR procedure (court procedure) RCN tried to speed up the permit procedure. The judge declined the request for a temporary provision. Now RCN, together with the St. Maarten authorities, will continue the permit procedure that was already started.

Meanwhile supplementary agreements were made with the company which is operating the cable ship and the suppliers regarding a possible later connection of the northern part. The connection of this part increases the reliability of internet services on Saba and St. Eustatius. Besides, the Dutch government also needs the cable for carrying out its tasks on the Dutch part of St. Maarten

Sybren van Dam: “We are pleased that Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Kitts are connected, but the project will only be completed when both sides of the seacable is connected”.

  1. It would be good for someone to come out and explain to the Saban community how this will benefit Saba? From my sources up until now neither the RCN or anyone else has sat down with Saba Telephone Company to discuss this whole fiber optic cable project on how Satel can gain from it. We all welcome faster and affordable internet service but someone needs to tell us how it will work because my well placed sources is telling me that more bandwidth is needed but at an affordable price for the community. Maybe the RCN can inform the masses.
