Health lecture follows Lions Club fundraiser

A well-attended public health awareness event organized by Saba Health Care Foundation (SHCF) took place Saturday evening, following a fundraiser by Saba Lions Club. The two events are part of the general drive of local community-based organizations to create synergy in serving the community. The lecture on prostate diseases, with emphasis on prostate cancer, was jointly sponsored by SHCF, the Lions and AIDS Support Group Saba Foundation. Held at Sunny Valley Youth Center in The Bottom, the event featured a presentation by urologist Dr. Jason Petronilia, who allowed an extensive question- and-answer session, followed by further interaction during the on-site buffet. Saba Lions held a fundraising car wash and food sale Saturday morning, raising an estimated US $1,300 to go towards the club’s annual activities.

Lion Rudolph Hassell and other dedicated club members sold food and car wash tickets. Over 100 tickets for lunch meals were sold at the Eugenius Johnson Center in Windwardside. Over 15 cars were washed, said Hassell, adding that “each Lion contributed either by working, preparing food or monetarily.” Club members are to act as community role models in attending the public health awareness sessions, and encouraging family and friends to set aside their reluctance and empower themselves through knowledge. Hassell was pleased to see the Youth Center filled with participants who felt comfortable to ask questions. The Lions Club held a church service at Zion’s Hill on Sunday for the new club president, followed by a celebratory brunch.
