Economic Affairs head gets metrology training

Head of Economic Affairs in Saba Dave Levenstone together with representatives from St. Eustatius, Bonaire and Curaçao completed two weeks of training in metrology in Delft, The Netherlands, recently. The training consisted of “rigorous, theoretical and practical training” in weights and measurements, Levenstone said. The training, held by National Metrology Institute of The Netherlands, was to thoroughly prepare those in Ministries of Economic Affairs to better execute routine checks on gas station pumps, for example, making sure they meet certain standards. The institute maintains and develops measurement standards.

Levenstone sees this training as a plus for Saba, as there is no department to oversee these responsibilities. This was the first training session offered and a follow-up is scheduled in Bonaire for January. The equipment used for metrology has been approved by the Dutch government for use in the islands mentioned. Most of the equipment will be kept on Bonaire and St. Eustatius, but if needed will be transported to the other islands.

As laws have been passed regarding metrology, Levenstone hopes these laws will be translated into English so that information can be given to businesses and other persons who wish to adhere to measurement standards. At the end of the training, participants were given certificates to show that they had completed their training session successfully. Saba’s Government supported the training, which took place October 1-12.
