Growing international fame for Saba’s best known artist

Heleen Cornet, the island’s best-known, most prolific and most sought-after artist will showcase her work in a special exhibit at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York. The exhibit entitled “Melange of Milieu” runs from November 1 until November 21 with an opening night reception to be hosted on November 8. The artist and her manager Gersh Geenty, will both be travelling to New York for the exhibition and will attend the reception. The two will be joined by other Cornet devotees who announced they will travel from Saba, The Netherlands, Canada, Virginia and Connecticut to attend the opening night. Invitations to the Opening Night reception can be obtained by contacting The Peanut Gallery in Windwardside.

It is already 16 years ago that Heleen Cornet had an exhibition in São Paulo in Brazil. Cornet has long established her name and her work continues to receive greater attention with multiple international exhibit requests. “Melange of Milieu” is only the first of at least four overseas exhibitions of Cornet’s work in 12 months. The New York exhibit will be followed by one in Curaçao, St. Maarten and two scheduled exhibitions in The Netherlands.

The work selected for the New York exhibition will be collectively featured with a number of different artists, whose media and styles contrast and complement each other to “bring illumination to the shared mysteries of being human.” In the press release by The Peanut Gallery, Geenty explains that the pieces chosen for the New York exhibition are “all redolent of her surroundings on the island that she has made home; the rainforest, the flora and fauna, and the colours, textures and atmosphere of Saba.”

The selection consists of five water colours on canvas paintings, a new medium in which the artist is in the vanguard and for which she has recently won an award for innovation. The Watercolor magazine will shortly be featuring an article on Cornet’s work and her pioneering techniques. She will also be featured in the new edition of the ‘Splash’ series of books published by North Light.
