The Elfin Forest 2012
Watercolor on Canvas
34″ x 46″

Dutch-born artist Heleen Cornet subverts many typically Dutch conventions: she paints with watercolors rather than oils; prefers to paint on canvas rather than paper; and takes inspiration from the environment, the flora and fauna that surrounds her.

Since 1974 Cornet has lived in the Caribbean, where the lush cloud-draped rainforest has become the subject of choice in her bold and surreal landscapes. She recently received an award for innovation in watercolor at the International Triennial of  Caribbean Art, and it’s not hard to see why: she wields the normally diffuse pigments with uncharacteristic intensity while maintaining their watery texture. The deep, dark purples, oranges, browns, greens and blues that give many of her paintings structure are as saturated as oil paints yet maintain the flowing gradients of watercolour paints. The resulting expressionistic forestscapes, almost like Henri Mattisse with a neon palette, practically explode with life and color. Cornet’s precise lines and flowing hues lend her tropical landscapes stunning vitality.
