Dutch Caribbean photo contest a big success

The first Dutch Caribbean international nature photo contest of the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) and the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), in conjunction with various Dutch partner organisations, turned out to be a great success. Almost 250 persons together submitted over 1,350 photos to the organisers of the photo contest, held in connection with the 25th anniversary of SCF. Richard Stanage from Vienna, Virginia in the United States won the main prize: an eight-day trip to Saba for two persons, donated by DCNA en SCF. The jury almost unanimously qualified Stanage’s photo as “surprising,” “artistic” and “fascinating” which combined the world above water and underwater in an “extraordinary way.” “It almost looks like a painting of Gaudi, every time your eyes are drawn to another part of the photo.” The subjects and quality of the submitted photos varied a lot, but it was clear that all photos were taken with a passion for nature of the Dutch Caribbean, said the jury. The jury said it had a “hard time” selecting the winning photos in the different categories. Among the photos, submitted by both local residents and visitors, adults as well as children, were many photographs of local birds, flowers, trees, insects and fish. But there were also many photos depicting natural sceneries on all six Dutch Caribbean islands. All photos, including all prize winning photos, can be viewed on www. fotowedstrijd.DCNA.nl.

The independent jury comprised of Director of the Saba Tourist Office Glenn Holm, professional maritime photographer and former National Geographic photographer Mauricio Handler, photo editor Rene Alblas of the Dutch nature magazine Roots and professional photographer Henkjan Kieviet who lives in the Dutch Caribbean for over five years.

The photo contest was made possible with various Dutch partners, Nature Monuments (Natuurmonumenten), National Forestry Service (Staatsbosbeheer), Bird Protection (Vogelbescherming Nederland) and Fotofabriek.nl.
