Governor Johnson voted Saba’s Person of the Year

The 6th Annual Saba People’s Choice Awards and Talent Show 2012 took place at Sunny Valley Youth Centre in The Bottom on Saturday, November 3. Island Governor Jonathan Johnson was elected Person of the Year in the annual event, organized by Malofi Foundation and Lorsim Productions N.V. to celebrate outstanding individuals in the community. The goal was to stimulate youths in their educational, sports, music, art and literature endeavours, and gives locals the chance to choose the best individuals in the categories music/art; sports/education and business/ economy. A food sale ensured the sustainability of the annual event.
Some 50 people attended the awards show, hosted by Lorna Simmons and Jessica Gumbs. During the ceremony Sacred Heart Primary School children, led by teacher Miranda Simmons, sang three gospel songs, accompanied by a drummer. Elvis Levenston sang a gospel and a Christmas song. Karel Sorton played two instrumental songs on steel pan.
Awardees in the music/arts category were XP Band, singers Shanell Heyliger and Brandon Caines, instrument player Desmond Caines, Saba Anthem, and Saba Artisan Foundation.
Awarded in the sports/ education were best sports team The Vipers, best female and male athletes Joelyn Robinson and Shavez Robinson, best coach Derek Spence, best teacher Carmille Blackman and best student Coulton Johnson.
Winners in the business and economy section were best organization Saba Girls and Boys Sports Society, My Store (best store), best boutique El Momo Folk Art and best restaurant Swinging Doors. Johnny Luis Mateo Ramirez was voted the best employee, Juliana’s Hotel and Apartments was voted best hotel, Wolfgang Tooten was selected as the best employer/businessman.
