New Cultural Building to be opened on Saba Day

The 37th annual Saba Day weekend celebration from Friday, December 7, up until and including Sunday, December 9, will be held under the theme “Moving Forward Together.” The schedule, released by Commissioner Bruce Zagers’ office on Thursday, mentioned a long list of activities and events. The festivities will be kicking off on Friday, December 7, with the ringing of joy bells throughout the island at 6:00am, calling attendants to the ecumenical church service at the Anglican Church in The Bottom, which will start at 8:30am. Following the church service, a procession will be leading from the church to the new Cultural Building at 9:40am. The official welcome, the hoisting of the flags and the singing of the anthems, and the public addresses will be taking place from 10:00am, after which the new cultural complex will be officially opened at 10:30am.

The opening of the building will be marked by a public reception and art exhibition until 2:00pm. Cultural booths will be lining Mathew Levenstone Street from 11:00am for “Taste of Saba.” Sports fans will be flocking to Johan Cruijff Court where a soccer tournament will start at 4:00pm, or to Juliana’s Sports Field from 7:00pm to participate in or witness a basketball tournament. Fishermen will be out and about early on Saturday, December 8, for the “For the Love of the Catch” Wahoo tournament, which will start at 12:01am and ending at 4:00pm. Saturday will be marked by a broad range of sports activities, starting with the Island Cross/Walk from Juancho Yrausquin Airport at 6:00am. The Sports Day at Johan Cruijff Court will start at 9:00am, with a softball tournament starting at 1:00pm, and a soccer tournament at 4:00pm. Basketball aficionados are welcome at a tournament at Juliana’s Sports Field from 7:00pm.

The traditional booths at Fort Bay will open at 10:00am. A performance by Ultra Sonic band from Nevis is planned for 6:00pm. Sunday, December 9, the final day of Saba Day 2012 celebrations, will open with a pig fish tournament from 6:00am until 10:00am. The Fort Bay booths will open from 10:00am. Other activities include a paint ball tournament at 11:00am, a softball tournament at Johan Cruijff Court from 12:00pm, and boat excursions for children at 2:00pm. Small Axe band from St. Kitts will perform from 6:00pm. The Saba Day 2012 celebrations will be closed off at midnight.
