Police helped a sea-rescue mission

Police on Saba helped lead a sea-rescue mission Sunday after a boat carrying the island’s softball team was stranded with engine failure. A passenger aboard Dawn II reported a problem about 6:45pm that evening, alerting the police. Officers phoned in helped from St. Maarten’s Coast Guard unit, which deployed a vessel that had been on St. Eustatius to help. No one was hurt, although a few passengers reported being seasick. Dawn II’s captain refused help from St. Eustatius’s vessel, Waterman, which was also sent to help. Instead a boat from Saba arrived later to tow it to Fort Bay. Dawn II was stranded about eight miles off the coast of St. Eustatius. Saba police are awaiting the Coast Guard’s report. No one has filed complaints for being stranded.
