Wilhelmina Park to be upgraded

The Island Government of Saba and Hescon Enterprises NV signed a contract Friday, to renovate Queen Wilhelmina Park in The Bottom, Own Your Own Home Foundation (OYOHF) Director Rolando Wilson announced in a press release. Funding of US $164,089.89 for the renovation was made available through the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations. Island Council member and leader of the governing Windward Islands People’s Movement (WIPM) Wilson stated that the project is part of the liveability projects. He said once completed, a maintenance and management plan will also be enforced. “The Island Government is very happy and thankful to housing corporations Woonlinie, OYOHF and the Planning Bureau for lobbying for this project,” Wilson said.

    One may hope that this is a plan with respect for the cultural historic value. As far as I know, there are only two parks / gardens that deserve to be protected as “green monuments”: The Wilhelmina Park and the garden around the Harry L. Johnson museum. Advice can be asked from the organisation for garden architecture history Cascade. The former chairwoman of this organisation, Carla Oldenburger, knows these two gardens.
