The Daily Herald of today reports extensively on the opening of Saba’s Carnival 2013. Island Governor Jonathan Johnson handed over the symbolic key to the Carnival Village in The Bottom to Saba Cultural Foundation Treasurer Julietta Woods during Monday’s official opening of Saba’s 2013 Carnival Season, themed “Jump and Scream, Carnival 2013.”

Reigning Teen Carnival Queen Joelyn Robinson and reigning Junior Carnival Queen Natalia Peterson assisted in cutting the ribbons in officially opening the Village.
Carnival in Saba jumped off Monday night with a lighted parade from St. Johns to The Bottom, followed by live music from St. Kitts’ Kollision Band for the remainder of the evening.
The opening parade did not gather a large crowd as most people waited at Carnival Village for the official opening ceremony. At the gate, Governor Johnson handed the key to the longest serving member of Saba Cultural Foundation Julietta Woods.After the crowd had entered the newly repainted stadium, Irving Riley opened the ceremony by singing the Saba Song. He was followed by Commissioner of Culture Bruce Zagers who gave his welcoming remarks.
Many spectators received freebies and purchased this year’s specially issued T-shirts with the 2013 Saba Carnival motto “Jump and scream.”

There were no incidents reported by the police but some participants noted a number of children and youth abusing alcohol.
The festivities continued Tuesday evening with Soca Xplosion, featuring Burning Flames and Onyan, Grand Masters Band and DJ Outkast.
Today, Wednesday, will be featuring performances by Carimi-Touch Kompa, Kollision Band and Saba Danza Cultural Troupe.
Caribbean Night Soca with a Twist will be taking place on Thursday, with shows by
Destra, The Untouchable Dancers and DJs.
The Annual Calypso Competition is scheduled for Friday. Musical entertainment will be provided by Ebony Steel Orchestra and Fya Empress.
The Carnival weekend will kick off Saturday, 4:00am, with Jouvert Morning, starting from Windwardside to Carnival Village.
The Grand First Day Parade through the streets of The Bottom will start at 4:00pm. The Last Lap Parade through The Bottom will be held Sunday, July 28, at 4:00pm.
Carnival will be officially closed off with a performance by Small Axe Band International from St. Kitts and the burning of King Momo at midnight
