The Daily Herald writes that Roman Catholic priest Father Danilo “Dan” Pastor announced the upcoming visit to Saba of Bishop Luis Antonio Secco, accompanied by all clergymen of the Diocese of Willemstad, on Wednesday. The parish priests of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten and Saba are gathering this week on Statia for a retreat. All 34 priests of the diocese will arrive at Fort Bay harbour at noon and parishioners are welcomed to greet them and join the motorcade to Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Zion’s Hill. The priests will share a meal prepared by parishioners at the community centre on the church premises. Next, the clergymen will take a tour of the island ending at Sacred Heart Church in The Bottom. There, a special youth session will be organised by the sisters of the Living Water Community under the motto “Speak up, speak out – your time, your space.” This youth gathering will start at 3:30pm, followed at 4:30pm by a special mass officiated by Bishop Secco, with all visiting priests in attendance. Father Dan invites all to “come celebrate this historic moment on our island.”
All 34 priests are travelling? If civil servants and politicians from these islands would have been doing this, the complaints about wasting money would have been numerous. The expenses of this “holiday” could better have been donated to the Lions Club. They understand what is beneficial for society.
Since the moneys used for the travel did not come from public funds which were generated by government taxes, the moneys spent should not be a source of public scrutiny by someone who has no knowledge of the purpose of the event. It seems somewhat pompous for any individual to take it upon himself to make such a public declaration.
