In their press release of today the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force communicated the following information:
The local governors, the Public Prosecutor Office and the police are satisfied with the course of the action “FIREARMS OFF THE STREET, HAND IN THAT WEAPON” . During this action a total of five firearms were handed in. On St. Eustatius 1, on Saba 2 and on Bonaire 2.
Between November 6h and 13th inhabitants of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba could hand in their weapons voluntarily during these special days. This action was in principle without prejudice to the owner of the (fire) weapon, unless in a later investigation it appeared that the weapon had been involved in a crime. Then there would be an investigation.
The aim of this action was to:
– decrease the number of illegal weapons and ammunition in circulation and because of this, the increase of the integral safety on the islands;
– to inform citizens about the regulations in force.
The police would like to thank all inhabitants who handed in a firearm for their cooperation.
TARGET ACTIONS
The coming period the police will take several target actions, in order to get more firearms of the street. This to improve the safety of the residents and visitors of the islands.
NEW FIREARMS POLICY
On January 1st, 2014 a new integral firearm policy will be introduced. The citizens will be informed about this later this year.
