National Ombudsman visit

The Daily Herald announces that representatives of the National Ombudsman’s Office will hold consulting hours next week. They will be on Saba from December 9 to 11. Citizens may consult with the National Ombudsman about complaints regarding the local government or local authorities. Stefan Pfeifer and Armin Dorn Saba will accommodate visitors at different locations and times during office hours. Consulting with the National Ombudsman is free of charge.

The Ombudsman will listen to all grievances about government and civil servants. Among possible issues are the following: is government listening to you? Are letters being answered? Do you receive the information you requested? Are local authorities treating you with respect and honesty and can you rely on them? Established in The Netherlands in 1982, the National Ombudsman is an impartial body that, upon request or by its own initiative, investigates good governance and checks if local authorities are transparent, respectful, engaged, honest and reliable and if they actively try to find solutions for any issues that arise. These criteria have been laid down in a code of conduct for government which, inter alia, focuses on basic rights, including anti-discrimination rules and protection of citizens’ privacy. Alex Brenninkmeijer has been Ombudsman since 1982. His offices in The Hague deal with complaints about the kingdom, provinces, local councils, public entities, the police, National Government Service RCN and the tax office. Worldwide, about 80 countries have an institution similar to that of the Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman’s Office will be holding walk-in consultations on Saba on Monday, December 9, from 4:00 to 6:00pm, at Saba Roads and Construction in The Bottom, and at Child Focus Foundation at Honeybee Building in Windwardside on Tuesday, December 10, from10:00am to 12:00pm. Persons can call 416-9006 to make an appointment December 9-11.  Appointments between December 9 and December 11 can be made by sending an email to i.samaniri@nationaleombudsman.nl.
