Long-serving pilot and mechanic Dennis Dowling and Captain Age Brouwer were also recognized for their contributions. Much esteemed by the public for his impeccably smooth landings, Captain Brouwer is an experienced pilot, formed on Aruba and Curaçao. Since flying to Saba in 1984, he piloted more than 13,440 flights from St. Maarten. The Island Government also recognized Captain Roger Hodge, who has piloted flights to Saba since 1990, having logged more than 11,000 flights. Local Captain Garvin Peterson was also recognized. He served Saba for a long time and is currently piloting across Asia. In closing the official part of the programme, Winair’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Cleaver ensured the public of the airline’s continued commitment to service the island. He thanked all customers for their support. Captain Hodge especially thanked the Johnson family for their continued efforts to support Saba’s aviation. The Island Government recognized the pivotal role of late airport manager George Leo Hassell in naming the airport tower after him. Transportation Commissioner Chris Johnson officiated the unveiling of the plaque together with Hassell’s wife and his descendants. Commissioner Johnson said Hassell had not only served the airport for more than 29 years, but held all positions possible there. Johnson was humoured by the misunderstanding concerning the naming of the tower and apologized for the misspelling of Hassell’s name, a technicality; he said will be promptly corrected. The Saba Day reception continued with youth-dance performances and traditional music performed by Occasionals Band and Ebony Steel Orchestra.
