RCN completes construction of fibre optic cable on Saba and Statia

In recent months, the last part of the Saba Statia telecommunications fibre optic cable between Saba, St. Barts and St. Maarten has been realized.

The Saba, St. Eustatius St. Kits part was already constructed and put into use last year. In the next two months, the final part such as installing equipment on the islands will be completed  and the part of Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten can also be put in use.

By then, the operators at Saba and St. Eustatius, like Satel and Eutel, will have access to two separate twin (redundant) connections for broadband capacity and can therefore offer higher speed and internet subscriptions and other internet services to consumers and businesses on Saba and St. Eustatius. Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland will not offer internet subscriptions or services on the islands themselves.

By analogy with the improvement of the internet on the Windward Islands, RCN in collaboration with Caribbean Telecom and IT Services, will start a survey on the improvement of the internet on Bonaire in the months to come.

Although the current situation on Bonaire is not comparable to the original situation in Saba and St. Eustatius, it appears that the usage of broadband internet, the average speeds and the pricing lag behind the developments in the region.

In the study, various options will be explored, such as the formation of a combined purchase and installation of an additional fibre optic cable. It is expected that this survey will be completed in mid-July 2014.
