Saba Archaeological Research Centre SABARC manager Helena “Heli” Böhm said the organisation is stepping up its weekend youth activities. This writes The Daily Herald. The group held a youth camping trip on Paris Hill on Saturday. Böhm and Peter Johnson were the chaperones. Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) assisted by lending SABARC three tents. Despite the frequent rain showers the group hiked, set up camp, collected wood and had an evening camp fire on Paris Hill.
The camping experience was combined with the usual weekly archaeological site visits; this time at a nearby ruins. “For one or two it was their first camping experience and they seemed to fully enjoy it” said Böhm. “It was a challenging hike. However, the kids embraced this and I think they enjoyed the adventure. Overall, it was a great success and the students had a great time.” Böhm hopes to organise camps more often.
This upcoming weekend the group is heading to the West Coast trail from Ladder Bay Road to Cow Pasture and Middle Island, where SCF, together with a group of Canadian volunteers, recently started to clear the sites of vegetation. SCF trail manager James Johnson found a hoard of pottery pieces while clearing the area and shared these with SABARC for proper identification. “There are plenty of ruins along the trail and many artefacts to be collected by the students,” said Böhm in hoping to entice more young Sabans into a “treasure hunt.”
