Four parliamentary debates are awaiting Plasterk – BES issues will be central

The Daily Herald reports that the Public health in the Dutch Caribbean, the evaluation in the Caribbean Netherlands, developments in the Kingdom and the public entities Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba will be the central
themes of four future debates of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament with Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk.

It was decided during a procedural meeting of the Kingdom Relations Committee on Wednesday, that the first debate will take place on April 10, and will deal with this year’s evaluation of the coordination of the tasks that the Dutch Government carries out in/ or on behalf of the Caribbean Netherlands.

The minister informed Parliament last Friday, on the evaluation process and the decisions that the Council of Ministers has taken in this regard. The cabinet decided on Friday, to implement the recommendations of the Small Evaluation Committee Caribbean Netherlands, of which Saba Island Governor Jonathan Johnson is a member.

Member of the Second Chamber Roelof van Laar of the Labour Party PvdA requested a separate debate on the Trend Report of the FWG bureau about healthcare in the Dutch Caribbean. Van Laar said the findings of the report were important and sufficiently worrisome to merit a separate debate. Van Laar asked that not only Minister Plasterk, but also Minister of Public Health, Wellbeing and Science Edith Schippers be present at that debate for which a date has yet to be set.

The half-yearly reports of the Council for Financial Supervision CFT about Curaçao and St. Maarten, the progress reports on the improvement of the detention facilities in Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten, and the results of the Kingdom Conference in Aruba on April 2, will be discussed at a third debate with Plasterk. A date has not been set for this debate as yet.

A fourth debate with Plasterk will also be scheduled for the near future on issues relating to the Caribbean Netherlands. Initially, this debate was scheduled to be held early March in Parliament’s Permanent Committee for Home Affairs. However, it has been decided, with the approval of the Home Affairs Committee, that the Caribbean Netherlands portfolio will be transferred to the Kingdom Relations Committee. A new date will be set for
this debate with the latter committee.
