In observing Haitian Flag Day, members of Saba’s Haitian community gathered at Princess Juliana’s Sports Field in The Bottom on Sunday to mark their identity and thank Sabans for their hospitality. This writes The Daily Herald. Haiti Association President Germaine Mermane and Joseph Louimaire spoke on behalf of those gathered announcing that a Website is under development for the Haitian Community Foundation (HCF) of Saba. Mermane said that the foundation was established on Saba with the support of advisers Franklin Wilson and Roy Smith in 2006. Ever since, HCF organized peer support and fundraising activities. The foundation seeks to work with other community-based organizations and volunteers in serving the community. Currently, foundation members are fundraising for a grant to assist a hospital in Haiti. So far, they have held food sales, but they encourage other organizations to help them build capacity in this effort. They hope to also act as an entrepreneurial-support organization and expect to soon secure funds for the opening of a souvenir shop here. Merman and Louimaire both thanked the Island Government and the Saban community for all the support and encouragement received.
