Sacred Heart School group 6 on cruise

The Daily Herald writes that grade-6 pupils from Sacred Heart Primary School departed Saba on Saturday for an innovative school excursion on Carnival Cruise Lines, which left from Puerto Rico on Sunday and will return June 15. “The trip is a fabulous learning opportunity. They will experience the food and culture of neighbouring islands, while having the opportunity to see and learn more about Caribbean history. Studying the Caribbean region and our relationship to other islands is part of the Grade-6 Social Studies programme,” teacher Ashley Hassell said. “As extravagant as a cruise sounds, it is actually a very affordable option for group travel. Flying, staying in hotels and finding activities on multiple islands would be extremely expensive, but through this cruise we have that luxury with one flat rate. As well, all food and beverages are included in the cruise fee. And there are a lot of dining options…and best of all, a specific club on board for children of this age where they can socialize and meet new friends.”

Planned activities off the ship include a school visit to Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School on Barbados, scenic and historic tours of St. Lucia and St. Maarten, as well as a meeting with Living Water Community on St. Lucia and a visit to a national park on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Principal Diane Wilson, Hassell and the pupils thanked the community of Saba for their support, as well as Director Marketing and Sales of Windward Islands Airways International WINAIR Claudio Buncamper who generously reduced flight fares to accommodate the group, other contributors and all parents who actively participated in fundraisers.
