SFPCA celebrates new board and anniversary

The Daily Herald writes that Saba Foundation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFPCA) celebrated its 10-year anniversary with the election of a new board recently at Harry L. Johnson Museum in Windward Side. Cassandra Holm was elected new president of the SFPCA board, and former president Evette Peterson was elected Vice President. Other new SFPCA officers are Betinna Schroeter, treasurer, and Vincent Stroom, secretary.
“We started in 2004 so it’s been 10 years,” said Petersen, who was a founding member of the organisation. “I was completely burnt out, so when Casey came, it was such a blessing that she was so willing to help. Then we met Bettina and Vincent. Over 10 years, you do have to change.” Other SFPCA members are Sophie Holm, a future animal advocate and Suzana van den Elshout, a special advisor, who is another founding member, along with Juliet Johnson.

“Back then we needed three people to start,” Peterson said. “I’m so happy now that we’ve got a new board and I can concentrate more on things like saving these dogs. I think we are more organised now and we will definitely keep working to help the pet population on the island.” Holm said that the group will continue to work on standing programmes like community awareness, pet vaccinations and breeding control, while trying to establish an animal shelter on the island. “We just want to create awareness basically,” Holm said. “We want people to know about de-worming pets and flea and tick prevention. Fleas and ticks can carry diseases and worms can pass to your children. We want people to keep their families safe. “Owners can register with us for five dollars and they can get their dogs spayed or neutered. That’s a big project that we are constantly working toward, but the biggest thing we are working on is trying to get a piece of land, so that we can have a place to rescue more dogs and cats. It’s a big step, but hopefully it is a future goal that we can work toward.”
