Harbor Masters from the neighboring islands of St. Eustatius and St. Maarten recently met on Saba for their regular consultations. Also part of the consultation are the law enforcement agencies, including the Coast Guard, police immigration and customs from each island. Environmental conservation organizations for the various islands are present in the meetings as well. The purpose of the consultation is to discuss areas of mutual concern and interest.
Due to the proximity of the islands each other and the amount of maritime traffic that regularly traverse the routes it is important the islands coordinate their efforts. Discussions focus on recent developments, port security, vessel registry as well as zoning and maritime traffic routes. The cooperation between the ports and law enforcement agencies was another point of the agenda.
Saba Harbor Master Travis Johnson said that the regular contact is essential because of the wide range of stakeholders on both a local and national level and facilitates dialogue in various areas.
