Commissioner Johnson Presents update Secondary Education Task Force

Commissioner of Education, Chris Johnson, earlier this week, presented an update on the continuing developments in the recently established Education Task Force. The ETF was established as there was no longer a board at the Saba Comprehensive School, the island’s only secondary education institution. Two members of the task force from The Netherlands, Wim Littooij and Sjoerd Slagter are on Saba to meet with stakeholders at the Saba Comprehensive School.

The task force members from The Netherlands come with distinguished careers in education. Besides being members of the Council of Secondary Education, both have been educators during their careers and are both advisors to Ministry of Education.

The composition of task force has changed since its initial introduction. The task force is now made up of the Commissioner of Education and the two members from the Council of Secondary Education in The Netherlands. There will be two participatory advisors, the Director of the SCS, Anton Hermans and the parent representative in the Participation Council. The two advisors will consult with the ETF on a regular basis.

Commissioner Johnson stated that the task force is “at its core looking at the school and how we can develop it in the best interests of the students.” The task force has already met with the teachers at the school to gather their input and recommendations. During the week of November 3-7 the task force members from The Netherlands will be on the island again and will meet other stakeholders in education.

In his statement the commissioner emphasized that “the ETF will make sure that the school year continues in the right direction and the overall functioning of the school is at a high level. Behind the scenes we will be looking at what is the structure of the school.”

The ETF also signed a “Declaration of the Educational Task Force for the Saba Comprehensive School”. This document outlines the objectives and goals of the task force, which are:

  1. To ensure the educational quality, learning environment, overall safety, stability and educational development of the Saba Comprehensive School with the best interest of the students as the absolute priority and foundation principle.
  2. To review the goals and priorities of the previous Task Force and the progress and execution of these objectives during the period of the last 2 school years.

  1. I thought it was said that this new Director was on the task force and now I reads that he’s not. Seems to me like they did not know what they was doing in the first place. Is this new Director even qualified to run Saba Comprehensive School? To me it look like he slowly being removed. Better still just bring Mr. Hemmie back as he live on the island and have many years of experience. Very simple solution to right the wrong.

  2. saffy. i correct you the new task force does know what they are doing. and yes the new director is more than qualified. and no the new director is not being slowly removed. my sources tell me that vo raad and ocw and the commissioner is very pleased wid him. and no i donnt see them bringing back the ex principal.

  3. The commissioner is stating in his update that the task force wants to ensure the educational quality, learning environment, overall safety, stability and educational development of the Saba Comprehensive School with the best interest of the students as the absolute priority and foundation principle and that the task force my dear Jake, is planning to review the goals and priorities of the previous Task Force and the progress and execution of these objectives during the period of the last 2 school years.
Jake. wake up and smell the coffee. Last Monday the director was threated by them like an outcast. No one wanted to have the director in their conversation. I saw this myself. The guy was alone. NO-ONE wanted to be in his company. You trying to say that things are going well and that they are pleased? A smoke curtain just to blind you and to hide their mistakes.
They are trying to cover their behinds because they all know they have been wrong and did not expect this back lash. The inspection is here and let them do their thing. When they are done we talk again.
    Adios

  4. Jake I forgot to mention but the two bullet points made by the ETF were already in place last school year. So don’t brag about the fact that this is what you want. It was already there but the Commissioner and OCW BES allowed the board to destroy it all for political reasons and lots of money.

  5. Well I hopes all teachers and staff gets the chance to talk to these people without this Director being in the room so they gets to hear what they really is feeling. This man has upset people outside the school as well by my accounts.

  6. René Caderius van Veen

It was the former director who was the one who was not qualified, being no more than an elementary school teacher.

  7. Dear Mr. Editor,
more than ever I am convinced that saba-news is indeed a RAG and slandersheet. I posted something dis morning ( and a couple other times)and for your reasons you chose not to edit it. Thats alright the RAG does belong to you and you can do with it as you see fit. However i am a lill confused because I did not slander anyone any more that sabaguru and many others has been doing.
I have come to the conclusion as to why you chose not to edit it, simply because you are probably “friends ” with sabaguru who is BKA HvX. and ofcourse you do not want to print anything against him. I could care less but believe me alot of people are so aware of what saba-news stands for and who it caters to. you can take your RAG and flush it.because that is what it is a RAG

  8. Mr. caderius you are so right the one and only one not qualified in this whole picture is the former director. it was never about the other teachers only about him. If he was so good how come inspection, vo-raad and all the rest has not re-instated him.
    Pick sense out of nonsense

  9. He been working in education in Saba and around the world for 20+ years as a director and ran our little school well for the few years he was in there. My child comes home and says the school not the same anymore and not what it used to be. Saba Comprehensive was ranked the heighest of all BES islands under Mr. Hemmie. If the kids aren’t enjoying going to school under these new changes then something need to be done before it too late.
