The Daily Herald writes that the recently renamed art gallery, “Five Square Art Gallery” on Saba, will start off its first exhibition of the season this Saturday. Renowned local artist Els Mommers will be opening her exhibition called “Splendour of the Caribbe-an” at the formerly known Peanut Gallery at 5:00 pm. “Splendour of the Caribbean” will be an exhibition of paintings and fibre art.
Mommers continues to push the boundaries in the esoteric world of fibre art and creates pieces Five that are influenced by her lush Caribbean environment. Whilst textiles are Mommers’ medium of choice, she is also an accomplished painter using acrylics. Both media will be represented in the exhibition. Mommers has a working studio and small museum/gallery nestled high on the slopes of Troy Hill, with inspirational views of the Caribbean Sea. In her gallery she exhibits “molas,” a traditional art form made out of textile produced by the Kuna Indians, as well as examples of her own work. In her studio she teaches workshops to people of all levels, from beginners to professionals.
Mommers was born in Holland where she earned a Master’s degree in textile art and art education. She then taught fine art in Holland before moving to Saba in 1987. Mommers spent 10 years teaching art at the Saba Comprehensive School before opening El Momo Cottages with her husband Gied. She also ran El Momo Folk Art from 1998-2009. The exhibition at Five Square Art Gallery will run from Saturday, December 13, until Friday December 27. Drinks and food will be provided and all are welcome.
