Movie night about bullying

The Daily Herald writes that a movie night with free popcorn was organised at the Eugenius Johnson Centre in Windwardside last  Saturday.  The movies shown were a documentary called “Bully” and the movie “The Hunger Games.” The event was organised by Body, Mind and Spirit (BMS) also known as AIDS Support Group Saba Foundation (ASGS), the Saba Lions club and the Centre for Youth and Family.

Saturday night was the first event in a four-part campaign with the goal of creating awareness to several problems the community on Saba is facing. Following the first movie night focused on bullying; the second movie night, which is planned for May will carry the theme of domestic violence. Youth worker Monique Wilson, also a candidate at the upcoming elections for the Saba Labour Party, claimed that the topic of bullying has not been addressed recently and needs to be given more attention. “The two movies we’ll be showing tonight will be entertaining for all ages. First we show an informative documentary after which a more entertaining movie is shown” Wilson explained to the Daily Herald.

Bully, originally titled The Bully Project, is a 2011 documentary film about bullying in US schools. Directed by Lee Hirsch, the film follows the lives of five students who face bullying on a daily basis. The film was released in United States theatres on March 30, 2012.

The Hunger Games (2008), is based on a series of three adventure novels written by the American author Suzanne Collins. The series is set in The Hunger Games universe, and follows characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark as they battle through deadly games and face the results of their every action. “For parents an informal movie night like this is good to clear the way to talk to their children about the problems addressed,” Wilson explained further.

Programme coordinator of the Body, Mind & Spirit project, BMS Dimetri Whitfield, arranged, amongst other things, the distribution of flyers and emails for this event. He explained his awareness of several cases of bullying taking place on Saba at the moment.
