Islands in charge of supervision

The Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament approved on Tuesday, a change to the Caribbean Netherlands Commodities Law (“Warenwet BES”), which transfers the supervision on the quality of consumer products to the Executive Councils of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.
The law proposal, which still has to go to the First Chamber for approval, transfers the authority to supervise non-edible consumer goods to the public entities Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The islands were already in charge of the supervision of food and beverage products.

The transfer of the supervisory tasks to the Executive Councils and the control by local inspectors will result in a more effective system, as is currently already the case for food items. Until now the supervision of non-edible consumer products fell under the Dutch Inspection for Public Health IGZ. This supervision was deemed ineffective. The islands had asked for a change to the Commodities Law, reports The Daily Herald.
