The SLP fraction, mr. Ishmael Levenston and mrs. Monique Wilson, will be traveling to Holland today, May 29.
Together with the three other Island Council members, the acting registrar and delegations from Bonaire and Sint Eustatius they will visit the annual congress of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG). The VNG supports municipalities in their development as first government, closest to the citizens.
After arrival in Holland on Saturday May 30, the Saban delegation will meet with the Saban students. On Sunday they will travel to Apeldoorn where they will visit D1000 the next day.
During D1000 a large group of mayors, aldermen, councilors, clerks, municipal secretaries will discus the state of local democracy. They thereby invite a number of officials, residents, employers and thinkers to participate in this meeting of 1000 people under the slogan “ What does new tasks and changing society requires from local government and what does this mean for the functioning of local democracy ?”
The next two days are reserved for the VNG congress. In different meetings and excursions with renowned (inter)national speakers the congress is focused on the reinforcement of local democracy.
After travelling to The Hague, a combined meeting is scheduled with the Island Councils from the three BES islands, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.
The representatives from the BES islands will also meet with the members of the Permanent Committee for Kingdom Relations of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament.
Friday June 5, a meeting is scheduled with the Dutch Council of State (Raad van State). The Council of State is a constitutionally established advisory body to the government that consists of members of the royal family and Crown-appointed members generally having political, commercial, diplomatic or military experience. The Council of State must be consulted by the cabinet on proposed legislation before a law is submitted to parliament.
The SLP fraction will address subjects as the island’s economy, energy, housing and education in the combined meetings as well in the private meetings they have scheduled.
