Saba Reach Foundation holds computer courses

On Monday and also today, Tuesday, Saba Reach Foundation’s (SRF) Adult Education department organises two computer courses at Eugenius Johnson Centre in Windwardside, writes The Daily Herald.

On Monday, the Microsoft Office Excel Level 1 course was taught to a group of 13 students, and nine more students will be taking the same course today. The courses were certified and offered through Training and Development Centre (TDC) in St. Maarten and instructed by accredited trainer Sharon Kjellquist, who travelled to Saba for this purpose.

Successful completion of Level 1 courses implies that participants are familiar with using personal computers and know how to use the mouse and keyboard. Participants should be comfortable in the Windows environment and be able to use Windows to manage information on the computer. Specifically, participants should be able to launch and close programmes; navigate to information stored on the computer; and manage files and folders. Upon completion of the courses, participants will receive TDC certificates and should be able to create and edit basic Microsoft Office Excel worksheets and workbooks and/or create, edit, and enhance standard business documents using Microsoft Office Word.

SRF Director La-Toya Charles was present during the courses and remarked on trainer Kjellquist’s ability to accommodate the different aptitudes of the participants without holding back the rest of the class. “For some students, the courses were refresher classes in which they learned new functions of the programmes” Charles said.

Kjellquist enjoyed the two days of training. “The groups were wonderful,” she said. SRF offered these courses based on an initial request from the business community. Level 2 courses are scheduled for October.

Saba University School of Medicine, Island Communication Services (ICS) and Laura Linzey Day Care Centre enrolled their employees in the Level-1 courses. Based on demand, SRF will also organize the same courses again before the end of the year. SRF hopes that more companies will invest in their employees by enrolling them in courses offered through its Adult Education Department in the future.
