Students organise poker tournament

Saba University School of Medicine’s (SUSOM) fifth-semester students organised a poker tournament Saturday at Topo Gigio bar and restaurant in The Bottom, reports The Daily Herald.

Nine players participated in the event, which was won by SUSOM-student Michael Atkinson. The tournament was part of an ongoing fundraiser by Alpha Phi Omega Honour Society.

Three students organised the event which raised a total of US $220. Half of the proceeds went to the winner and the other half are going to three organisations on Saba: Child Focus, Saba Conservation Foundation and the Animal Shelter. After the tournament, Atkinson announced that his winnings would also go to the same charities.

The game started around 1:00pm and ended at 3:30pm. Near the end of the tournament, participant Joshua Holm went all-in and got lucky with a four-of-a-kind on the flop. The final showdown was between Atkinson and Dr. Drew Boileau.

Tournament organizer Robby Sahi said he was pleased with the event he put together along with fellow students Axel Wilson and Daniel Gomez.

As the last fi fth-semester students raised a total of around $1,000, Sahi said he is hoping to reach the same amount by the end of this semester.
