Government Service Caribbean Netherlands RCN, in cooperation with local stakeholders will be hosting a back-to-school motivational programme for young girls in St. Eustatius and Saba, writes The Daily Herald.
The “Sister Talk” motivational sessions will be facilitated by former American Idol finalist Nadia Turner, who is also a former Statia Carnival Queen.
The mother of two, who is now a performing artiste in the United States, will be sharing personal life experiences about sex and sexuality, peer pressure, self-esteem, the importance of education and other topics young girls encounter on a day-to-day basis. Turner will be conducting workshops for two age groups, both in Statia and Saba. The workshops in Statia will be hosted by RCN in cooperation with Mega D Youth Foundation, Gwendoline van Putten School, Aloei Dancers and Daughters of the King.
Girls between ages 14 to 19 are welcome for a workshop at Statia Lodges at White Wall Thursday, August 13, 6:00pm to 9:00pm. A workshop for girls ages 10 to 13 will be held at Gwendoline van Putten School Friday, August 14, 10:00am to 1:00pm.
Registration for the interactive workshops is free of charge and closes August 7. Persons interested may contact Alida Francis at 318-4989 or Lena Courtar at 318-0084.
Turner will be conducting a workshop for girls ages 10 to 13 in Saba at Child Focus Saturday, August 15, 10:00am to 1:00pm and for girls ages 14 to 20 at the Fire Department in The Bottom, that same day from 3:00pm until 6:00pm.
The workshops in Saba are organised by RCN, in conjunction with the Public Entity Saba, Child Focus, Saba Girls and Boys Sports Society’s afterschool care and Body, Mind and Spirit Foundation.

What a way to go in getting successful Statian’s to recontribute to the social development of youths on the islands. The process must follow a plan of mentorship with an intention to create greater empowerment of individuals, through learning and doing.
40 years of carnival on Saba
We are in the middle of saba’s carnival. A run down on events from previous nights. As saban I am happy to see that thus far all went well. Little things here and there but all minor. More and more Saba is attracting visitors from the surrounding islands as well as from abroad for its carnival. Welcome all visitors.
Congratulations to the winners of calypso and roadmarch show, to those that organized shows in carnival city and those who had troupes for the kids parade. Thank you for the time and effort you took.
Tonight will go down in history as carnival city full to capacity like never before. Lovely seeing the 6 dutch Caribbean islands come together for such an event . I say all the best to all contestants. You girls are all queens. Whichever island wins, let it be a FAIR WIN. Remember Saba, this is the first time Saba has been privileged to host such an event and we don’t want to mess this up by unfair judging so let the best island representative go with the crown. To the queen show committee, congrats with the efforts you out forth.
Last but not least, a big congratulation to the organizing carnival committee. Without a committee there would be no carnival, however a statement to be made. The selection of this committee was hand pick simply because you have two members who served as members in years past and resigned on their own free will and now are back on the scene of things (totally unethical). However we some people just like to be involved and calling the shots. When a member willingly resigns, they should not be allowed back on that same committee. Power and authority makes heads spin, they can’t help themselves.
