Danny strengthens over tropical Atlantic

Tropical Storm Danny, the fourth named storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season, continues to strengthen over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

The storm, which was named on Tuesday afternoon by the Miami based United States National Hurricane Center, is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday. Some additional strengthening of the tropical storm is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Danny was located at 11:00pm Tuesday about 1,505 miles/2,420 kilometres East of the Eastern Caribbean. The storm’s centre was located near latitude 11.2 North, longitude 38.8 West, moving West-Northwest near 14 miles per hour (22 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds had increased to near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the centre.

A few hours previously PIRATA buoy 41026 had reported sustained winds of 48 mph (78 km/h) as the centre of Danny passed just to the South. The estimated minimum central pressure was 1,000 millibars (29.53 inches).

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect for any of the Caribbean islands.
