The fortieth anniversary celebration of Saba Day wrapped up with an exciting weekend that included a full schedule of events.
Saturday started with the boats heading out on their quest for Wahoo at one minute after midnight.
Next was the gruelling Island Cross Country Run from Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport to Fort Bay. Fort Bay came alive Saturday morning with booths offering food and souvenirs with local DJ’s, bands and a bouncy castle for the children. Child Focus organized a youth soccer tournament, as well as an island baseball tournament at Johan Cruijff Court.
Sunday was riddled with rain delays, but featured more entertainment at Fort Bay with booths, music and various activities.
An adult tug-of-war, shooting competition, paintball tournament and kite competition were followed by an awards ceremony. Luis Colorado won for men’s shooting competition with Shawn Johnson and Ernest Hassell taking second and third place. For the women, Lara Kirkpatrick took first place, followed by last year’s champion Vera van Es. Third place went to Sonja Johnson. The paintball completion was won by Nathanael Johnson. The evening continued with live music and fireworks.
The prizes in the Wahoo Tournament were divided as follows. First prize for largest Wahoo went to Now and Then of Captain Bruce Zagers at 60.5 pounds. Second prize for most overall weight at 316.4 pounds went to Lady Carolina with Captain Ryan Hassell and third prize for second most overall weight (240.4 pounds) also went to Now and Then.
Prize for the largest Mahi at 15.5 pounds was captured by Oli-T of Captain Tini Tinitali of St. Maarten. The prize for the most caught barracudas (17) went to Navigator of Captain Julian Hassell.
The Saba Day weekend celebrations finished up at Fort Bay with Entyce Band from Saba and Spectrum Band of St. Thomas entertaining an enthusiastic crowd.
