Starting the 1st of January 2016, KNMI will provide the meteorological and seismological services for the Caribbean Netherlands.
Besides the weather forecasts for the general public, KNMI will also take care of the weather forecasts and specific weather bulletins for air and ship traffic. For extreme circumstances, such as hurricanes, high waves, and flooding due to copious rain, warnings are issued and advice is given to the governors, the Kingdom Representative, local crisis coordinators and the National Crisis Centre (NCC) of the Ministry of Security and Justice. For this KNMI will use the system that is already familiar in the Caribbean Netherlands.
In connection with the water supply systems on Saba and Sint Eustatius ten-day drought forecasts will be made during the dry season. On Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius en Saba, KNMI has seismometers at its disposition to follow earthquakes in real time. An observational network has been established to monitor the seismic activity of the volcanoes Mount Scenery and Quill and to issue tsunami warnings.
The observational, satellite and radar data of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba reach the Netherlands in real time, so that the meteorologists at KNMI can follow the weather on the islands closely in spite of the large distance.
In order to serve the islands best, KNMI collaborates with other meteorological services, among them those of Aruba, Sint Maarten, Météo France and the Meteorological Service of Curaçao (MDC).
