The Hideaway restaurant opens at Breadline Plaza

The Hideaway bar and restaurant officially opened at Breadline Plaza. The new eatery, which is operated by Camilo Usuga, his girlfriend Courtney Hassell and Chef Ryan Jacobs from Atlanta, Georgia, is open for lunch and dinner.

The Hideaway held its grand opening Friday, with many patrons filling the restaurant and Plaza outside.

Usuga was born in Colombia, but spent most of his life in St. Maarten, where he attended Hillside Christian School and Milton Peters College. He graduated in 2008 and moved to Saba six years ago. He worked at several restaurants here before opening his own establishment.

“The Hideaway serves food with a local touch and flavour at reasonable prices,” Usuga explained. “We want that everyone can afford to eat here.”

The restaurant is closed for breakfast, but will be serving brunches every other Sunday between 10:00am and 3:00pm. “This coming Sunday will be our first brunch. No reservations are needed,” said Usuga.

The small restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a small, but well-stocked bar, which serves beers, a selection of wines and spirits, as well as daily cocktail specials.

The menu consists of a selection of appetizers, salads and sandwiches. Lionfish and lobster sandwiches are The Hideaway’s specialties. The lionfish and lobster are caught in Saba’s waters by local fishermen and served fresh.

The menu features main courses with a choice of chicken, shrimp and rib-eye steak, as well as pasta. Desserts are also on offer, such as cake, flan and banana bread, and a daily special.

“Every Saturday we offer a 10-per-cent discount to everybody living on Saba, including students of Saba University School of Medicine,” Usuga said.

The restaurant, which has been fully refurbished by Usuga and a number of his friends, is open for lunch 11:30am-2:30 pm. Dinner is served from 5:30pm to 9:00pm.
