Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies presents survey results on Saba on Thursday, January 21

On Thursday 21 January, between 8:00 and 9:30 pm, KITLV researchers Dr. Wouter Veenendaal and Prof. Gert Oostindie will present the results of their opinion survey on Saba. The presentation will take place at the Eugenius Johnson Centre in Windwardside, and all those that are interested are cordially invited to attend.

KITLV is the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies. The KITLV Opinion Survey was conducted between 14 September and 31 October 2015. As part of the survey, 300 addresses on Saba were visited by local interviewers. Interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, and Dutch.

In contrast to the evaluation that was carried out by the Dutch government last year, the KITLV survey is an independent, academic survey, covering a broader range of topics. The results reveal how Sabans feel about their own politicians, how they think about the position of their island within the Kingdom of the Netherlands after the changes of 2010, to what extent they feel connected to other islands in the region, and what kind of future they desire for themselves and for the Island. Furthermore, a comparison will be made with a similar survey conducted in 1998, to see how the opinions and attitudes of Sabans have changed over the past 18 years.
