New Parking Lot In Windwardside Officially Opened

The new parking lot constructed in Windwardside was officially opened on Monday, February 22nd after almost a year of construction. Present at the opening were members of the Island Council, The Executive Council and representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment (I&M). The parking lot cost some 1.3 million dollars to construct and was financed through an interest free loan from the Ministry of Internal Relations, while the cost of building the 125,000 gallon gray water cistern under the parking lot was covered through a grant from I&M.

During the opening ceremony Island Governor Jonathan encouraged persons to use the parking lot and not park on the street. He spoke about how the streets in village had become congested and that if persons followed the regulations everything would go smoothly. Marjan Gezien, Head of the Delegation of I&M, told the gathering that the grant to build the cistern was made possible because of the great cooperation between Saba and the Ministry.
Commissioner of Finance, Bruce Zagers, spoke about the challenges that it took make the parking lot possible. He said that initially there were problems acquiring land in Windwardside to build a parking lot and when land was finally secured, there were issues with the securing funding for the lot. The commissioner mentioned that the parking lot became a reality because of the persistence of the Executive Council and their desire to find a solution to a growing problem.
