The medical insurance office for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba (ZVK), the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), Queen Beatrix Medical Center (QBMC), Saba Healthcare Foundation (SHF) and general practitioners of Saba and St. Eustatius, in a summit held recently in the Old Gin House on St . Eustatius has agreed on several important provisions to the benefit of the insured on Statia and Saba. Among others, that the SMMC will henceforth be considered by the ZVK as the preferred provider of hospital and specialist care in the windward region. The main premise in this is that what can be done at the SMMC in terms of hospital and/or specialist care, will take place at the SMMC.

The SMMC, in order to give proper content to the above mentioned premise, will soon start with the recruitment of additional medical specialists, in particular in the area of specialties such as neurology, urology, ophthalmology and orthopedics.

The participants at the summit had also agreed that visiting specialists to Saba and St. Eustatius will henceforward transpire under the supervision and responsibility of the medical institution where the specialist is employed.

Very important for the client service to our insured on Saba and St. Eustatius is the agreement that the healthcare facilities present on Saba and St. Eustatius, the SMMC and the ZVK, will be playing a much more active role in providing information regarding medical transferal and treatment abroad. The main premise in this communication process will be “specialist and hospital care as close as possible and far away if necessary.
