Former SUSOM student gets six months for arson

A 29-year-old former student of Saba University School of Medicine (SUSOM) was sentenced Tuesday, on appeal to six months for attempted arson, mistreatment with a weapon, and threats directed against the life of a person.

The Court of First Instance sentenced Peyman Homayouni-Nejad, who is of Iranian descent, to four months on June 16, 2015.

Following the Prosecutor’s Office, which recommended the Court of Appeals to sentence the defendant to nine months, the Court found it proven he had mistreated and threatened his former girlfriend during an argument on January 19, 2015.

The two Med School students were in an eight-year relationship. They were living together in an apartment complex in Zion’s Hill.

During the argument he sprinkled her with barbecue lighter fluid and threatened to set the house and both of them on fire. “I’m going to kill us both,” he allegedly told his girlfriend, who feared for her life. “I am going to put this whole place in fire,” he said.

On behalf of his client, who was not present for the appeal hearing, attorneyat- law Geert Hatzmann said Homayouni did not agree with the evidence filed against him and also disagreed with the punishment.

According to his lawyer, his client had become entangled in a “love triangle” with two “beautiful ladies.” However, what seemed to be like “every man’s dream” soon turned out to be a nightmare after his girlfriend fell in love with the other woman. He was enraged when he found out his girlfriend was leaving him and had packed her bags to leave Saba without his knowledge.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not lend much credibility to the attorney’s “moral sketch,” and considered all charges proven, including attempted arson. “Fortunately, he could not find any matches,” Acting Solicitor- General Anton van der Schans said during the appeal hearing on April 6.

The Court agreed with the Prosecutor’s Office as not only the woman’s and defendant’s bodies, but also the floor of their apartment was sprinkled with flammable fluid.

The victim sustained three cuts to her left wrist, hand and thigh in the incident in which Homayouni used a kitchen knife and a broken beer bottle. The Iranian was expelled from SUSOM after the incident.
