This week a sizable delegation from St. Eustatius and Saba will be travelling to Suriname to take part in the trade mission “Doing sustainable business between Suriname and the kingdom of The Netherlands, the Caribbean and Latin America.” The trade mission takes place at Royal Torarica hotel in Paramaribo on May 25 and 26.
The Chamber of Commerce will be represented by Chairman Koos Sneek and Executive Secretary Petronila Lara Reyes. Six entrepreneurs from the two islands will also be taking part: four from Statia and two from Saba. They are all active in the agricultural sector.
Their participation has been made possible through financing by the COSME programme for Competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.
This European Union (EU) programme is executed under the 10th European Development Fund, and is aimed at strengthening the small and medium enterprise sector and supporting organizations, and to improve regional cooperation between the 12 Carib bean Overseas Territories (OCTs) of the EU.
Participants in the trade mission will take part in a two-day congress and matchmaking sessions. They will also have the opportunity to go on a number of field trips to businesses, in particular in the agricultural sector.
Some 15 keynote speakers will be making presentations over the course of two days and will elaborate on the advantages offered when doing business between Suriname, the kingdom of the Netherlands, the Caribbean and Latin America. They are also to discuss how to do business successfully in Suriname and other parts of the Dutch kingdom.
Main part of the congress will be an entrepreneurial debate about the do’s and don’ts of intercultural entrepreneurship and why it is attractive for Suriname to spread its wings towards the kingdom, the Caribbean and Latin America, and vice versa.
Among speakers are Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname Glenn Gersie, Director of Caribbean Development Bank in Barbados Daniel Best, and Regional Representative of the European Investment Bank for the Caribbean in Santo Domingo Rene Perez.
On day two of the conference several presentations will be given about the diversification of the economy. President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI) in St. Maarten Peggy Ann Brandon will be addressing the diversifying economy of this island. The diversification of the economy on Statia and Saba will be highlighted by Sneek.
The 22nd trade mission is organized by InterExpo in Curaçao. Trade mission 23 is scheduled for November 29 to 30 at The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort and Spa. Participants in this trade mission are also scheduled to visit Statia and Saba.
