Stacey Mac Donald of The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in Leiden is carrying out a study to understand the motives of people from Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba to protect their cultural heritage and/or the natural environment of the islands. For this research she is looking for participants in Saba to fill out an online survey about their actions to protect the environment and/or cultural heritage and their reasons to do so.
About this research
While research about people’s motivation to conserve nature and culture has been conducted in other countries – such specific work is unique for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The social dynamics taking place on these islands and the individuals residing here require specific research to help understand who does what and why.
This survey is intended to gain these specific insights, which are particularly useful for NGO’s and (governmental) organizations focused on nature and culture conservation. But also for individuals who want to organize a project or form a group to contribute to nature or culture conservation of the islands.
This information can only be retrieved from individuals who live on Saba (or St. Eustatius or Bonaire) who are actively making efforts to protect the natural environment and/or cultural heritage of the island. Examples are people who work or volunteer at nature and/or heritage organizations, who organize or participate in (island) clean ups, cultural practices or festivities, or those who help create awareness about cultural heritage and/or the environment.

By participating you will move essential research forward. Without research, there can be no improvements to recruitment strategies and development of successful programs to conserve nature and culture – two important pillars for the wellbeing and development of Saba.

– …contribute to information needed to develop successful campaigns to get more people on Saba engaged in conservation actions;

Who can participate?
To participate, you
– …are 16 years of age or older;
– …currently reside on Bonaire, St. Eustatius or Saba;
– …have protected the natural environment and/or cultural heritage of the island in for at least half a day (4 hours) in the past six months.
What is expected of you?
Participants are asked to fill out an online questionnaire. Filling out the questionnaire will require a time commitment of approximately 20 minutes.
The questionnaire can be filled out in English, Dutch or Papiamentu.

Follow up?
The results of this study will be published on the KITLV website, in the local newspaper and in scientific journals. Of course, all data will be treated confidentially and the anonymity of participants is fully guaranteed.
