Date Set For 10th Saba Triathlon

The Saba Triathlon Committee, in their July meeting, set the 2017 date for the iconic Saba Triathlon. The race will be held

January 28th, 2017.

“We couldn’t be more excited,” said new committee chairman Peter Johnson. “The event brings some world class talent to Saba’s shores, in addition to tourists and Sabans who just want to have fun on Saba’s hills and trails.” Individuals and teams from Statia, St Barts, St Maarten, Anguilla, Aruba, the US, Canada, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands were represented at the 2016 race.

Newcomers to the committee include Dr Koen Hulshof and Island Secretary Tim Muller. Hulshof is Saba’s public health doctor and brings fifteen years of health and safety experience to the team. Muller, who moved to Saba with his family in 2015, represents the Saba island government, a vital partner for planning and execution of the many facets needed when planning a cross-island triathlon.

The triathlon is also organized in conjunction with other regional partners, namely Tri Sport SXM. “Tri Sport is one of the Caribbean leaders in triathlon event organization and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them,” said Johnson.

Saban-born Peter Johnson replaces Koen Van Laar, chairman for three years who is credited with reviving the race. Van Laar will be leaving Saba for employment opportunities in the Netherlands.

“Koen Van Laar did an amazing job bringing the Saba Triathlon to where it is today,” said Johnson. “He took a dormant race and through plenty of dedication and hard work brought in sponsors and athletes from all over to make an event that Saba is proud of. We’re looking to build upon this work in new ways. We’re even considering course changes that highlight Saba’s hills and nature even more, things that truly mirror the triathlon’s official tagline, ‘Where Even The Swim Is Uphill.'”
