Wellknown Dutch comedian Jörgen Raymann is calling on everyone to vote for Saba in the “Most Beautiful Nature Area of the Netherlands” public election.
Raymann, who is the ambassador of the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), said he was impressed by Saba’s nomination as one of the thirteen candidates in the Most Beautiful Nature Area of the Netherlands competition organised by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
During his first visit to Saba in the summer of 2016 Raymann was struck by the island’s beauty. “I was there for the Save Our Sharks project which aims to protect sharks and the coral reefs with the support of the National Postcode Lottery,” he stated in a press release of the DCNA.
Raymann said he decided then and there that he would return to Saba for a vacation. “It is incredibly beautiful and pure with a well-preserved tropical rain forest, unspoilt coral reefs and everything else. It was love at first sight.”
The comedian had a few special words for Saba’s inhabitants whom he lauded for their hospitality and warmth. He said that this caused visitors to feel very welcome. “You don’t lock your car or hotel room. It is a peaceful paradise on earth.”
The Most Beautiful Nature Area of the Netherlands election is mostly about the honour, but the associated monetary prize of 300,000 euros is very important to Saba, said Raymann. “Nature management costs a lot of money and Saba is not a rich island. Those 300,000 euros can make a true difference,” he said.
Additional park rangers can be deployed to look after the protection of Saba’s nature, more information can be relayed to the people about the importance of nature, and to further improve the accessibility and experience of nature.
Raymann said that he hoped everyone, just as he did, will vote for Saba on www.mooistenatuurgebied. nl. The closing date of the election is October 31.
