On October 10th, it was announced that Saba was nominated to be a part of the “Most Beautiful Nature Area of the Netherlands” elections. Over the past few weeks, the voting period was in progress, and the nature areas’ representatives encouraged the public to vote. These efforts included press releases, radio and skype interviews, mass emailing and social media marketing. Yesterday, on the “De Wereld Draait Door” show in the Netherlands, the winners of these elections were announced. Unfortunately, Saba was not one of the winners. While this is disappointing, we are very appreciative for the opportunity to showcase what a special island Saba is. During the elections, Saba received much recognition in many locations, creating positive promotion for the island and building awareness of its unique offerings.
The development plan for the funding offered in this competition included strengthening its nature and cultural products with elements like signage, which displays the historical importance of key sites on the island, such as Mary’s Point, heritage walks among the villages and a bird observation trail. While the island will not be receiving these funds, we will continue to work towards realizing our goal of the preservation of Saba’s nature and cultural products. Currently, there are projects underway or in the planning stages, which will also enhance these areas.
Saba is proud of its natural environment and its efforts for the preservation of our heritage and we are committed to the continued enhancement of the island’s products. The three stakeholders of the submission, the Public Entity Saba, the Saba Conservation Foundation and the Saba Archaeological Center, would like to thank everyone who voted for Saba and also those who helped to build awareness of the competition by encouraging others to vote. The outpouring of support and encouragement from the community showcased that Saba is dear to the hearts of many and reaffirmed that Saba maintains the title of the “Unspoiled Queen” of the Caribbean.
