The week will kick-off on Sunday November 20 with a potluck event at Cove Bay hosted by the different churches on the island. Mr. Nils Kastberg of UNICEF the Netherlands will welcome attendees with a speech and DJ Dave Levenstone will facilitate the event with music. The community is encouraged to come out and bring your favorite dish to share.

On Monday November 21st, the schools, in collaboration with UNICEF the Netherlands, will provide games and other activities that highlight children’s rights. During this day, The Ombudsman for Children will be at the schools on Saba to speak with the children. That evening, a festive information market will be hosted at the Eugenius Johnson Center, where Saban stakeholders will be present and provide information. Moreover, during this evening the Public Entity Saba will officially install its first Kids Council, which will consist of the 6th grade of the Sacred Heart School. Finger food and drinks will be provided.

After school on Tuesday, children from the Saba Comprehensive School can take part in basic first aid training, which would require registration. This could potentially create an interest in the students to pursue a career in medicine.

Wednesday, also promises to be really exiting, with a motivational speaker from the United States facilitating several assemblies: Mr. Keith L. Brown, aka ‘Mr. I’m Possible’. Early in life Keith was identified as an ‘at risk’ student. However, Keith was able to turn the tables and reach his goals. He wants to share this experience and lessons with the Saban Community at the Sunny Valley Youth Center Wednesday evening.

Thursday, the Center for Youth and Family and the Public Health Department has organized a glow in the dark walk-a-thon, while

On Friday a ‘picnic at the park’ themed event will be hosted at the library for the day care children. In the afternoon, the Police Station and the Fire Station will host an open day and the day will conclude with a children’s rights movie night hosted by BMS at the Eugenius Johnson Center.

At the end of the week there will be a sports and kickball tournament at the Johan Cruijff Field, in which we encourage parents to compete along with their children. The week promises to be a fun and interesting week and any children who film the week’s activities can win fun prizes. Visit ‘Children’s Week Saba’ on Facebook for details.

The week is a joint effort of the following stakeholders: After School Care, Body Mind and Spirit, Brandweerkorps Caribisch Nederland, Center for Youth and Family, Child Focus, EC2, Korps Politie Caribisch Nederland, Laura Linzey Day Care, Library, Missing Chapter Foundation, Public Entity Saba, Public Health Department, Saba Comprehensive School, Saba Conservation Foundation, Saba Health Care Foundation, Saba Reach, Sacred Heart School, Stichting voor Verslaving en Psychiatrie Caribisch Nederland, UNICEF the Netherlands and Voogdijraad
