Focus on youth organisations at Saba Day award ceremony

As is customary, a number of persons and organizations were awarded tokens of appreciation by the Government of the Public Entity Saba during the official Saba Day 2016 celebrations Friday in St. John’s for their dedication to Saba and its inhabitants.

Governor Jonathan Johnson gave an award to board members of Sacred Heart School. Founded by Dominican nuns in 1905, Sacred Heart is the oldest existing school, celebrating 11 years on Saba.

Saba Comprehensive School celebrated this past week its 40th anniversary. Started in 1976, the school was built because parents felt their children were too young to be sent away to be educated in a foreign place. Since then, the school made great strides in improving education for its students. For this achievement, the school board received an award from Commissioner of Education Bruce Zagers.

Child Focus is an umbrella organization that provides afterschool activities for youths on the island. Stacey Simmons and a board member received their award from Commissioner of Culture Rolando Wilson.

Awards were also handed out to three individuals. Young Saba pilot Luis Alverna, and Eric Linzey, who has taken it upon himself to travel with many sick Sabans, when they are being referred abroad for treatment, also received an award from Commissioner Wilson. The same honour was bestowed on Nurse Elizabeth Hassell, who is also known as “Aunty Lizzie.”
