On December 3rd 2016, Kevin Baldauf won the Sea to Scenery race that was a part of the Saba Day Weekend schedule of events. Baldauf, who finished in 51 minutes and 30 seconds, ran the course along with 10 other participants from the Cove Bay, located just below the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, to the summit of the highest point within the Kingdom, Mt Scenery. The course went through the heart of Windwardside with a total elevation gain of 900 meters.
The race, organized by the Saba Triathlon Foundation, was a deviation from the traditional island run that diverts around the mountain. “We wanted to have the race highlight Saba’s greatest asset, Mt Scenery,” said committee chairman Peter Johnson. Johnson and fellow committee member Koen Hulshof, both of whom competed, were pleased with the diverse turnout. “There was a good mix of people, it was great to see locals, people from the local medical school, and tourists all competing and having fun,” said Hulshof.
The race organizers recognized that they received a lot of help, namely from Vito Charles from the Festival Foundation, Lisa Hassell from the Saba Day Committee for providing trophies, along with local dive shop Sea Saba for providing the boat trip prize for the winner.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without our time keeping volunteers Jelle van der Velde and Tim Muller, who bravely organized the start of the race and then drove and raced up to the top of the mountain themselves in order to record the finish,” said Johnson.
Baldauf was joined by Jasper Oei and Girsh Brar, who finished 2nd and 3rd with times of 54:10 and 59:28, respectively.
Next year’s race is tentatively set for December 2nd, 2017. Baldauf was optimistic about his chances, but was also looking forward to the competition. “I hope to see an even bigger crowd and more Sabans take part!” said Baldauf.
