First online income tax returns already processed and assessed

Last week, the first digital tax returns were received and processed by the Tax Department, and assessments made for taxpayers in Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.

This means that some taxpayers have been informed already about the amount they have to pay or that will be refunded. Some have even received their money already, it was stated Friday.

As of February 20, taxpayers in Bonaire, Statia and Saba can file their 2016 income tax return (IB) online Filing tax returns online is deemed beneficial to both customers and the Tax Office.

If tax returns are filed online, the Tax Department can process these faster and customers may know sooner whether they have to pay money or will receive a refund. Since payment by the Tax Office is automated, customers may often receive the refund in their bank account before the notice of assessment/refund reaches them by mail, the Tax Service said.

Taxpayers who want to file their tax return online, but do not have a computer and/or scanner, can use the equipment in the hall of the tax office building during office hours.

The Tax Department guarantees that anyone, who has filed their tax return no later than May 15, will be notified before October 1. This notification can be a request for information, a letter or telephone call, but will usually be the notice of assessment, the Tax Department said.
