Grants for children groups in Caribbean Netherlands

Organisations in the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba) which have projects to boost children socially, via sports, culture and at school can apply for grants stemming from the one million euros extra per year made available by the Dutch Cabinet until 2021 to increase opportunities for children.

Organisations can submit plans from May 29 until June 12. The plans will be reviewed on a first-come-firstserved basis. If a plan is approved the organisation may receive funding to the grant until the ceiling is reached.

Not-for-profit organisations with a legal incorporation such as schools, foundations, churches and associations can apply for grants. The possibility also exists to apply for grants for next year. Funds can only be spent on items such as school supplies, subscriptions, sports clothing or music lessons for children.

The aim of the funds is to allow children whose parents cannot afford to provide them with a healthy meal and/or pay for them to participate in activities such as swimming and music lessons.

State Secretary of Social Affairs and Labour Jetta Klijnsma said via the grants the money will directly reach the children. “Every child does matter. It should not matter how fat the wallet of your father or mother is in order to be able to participate,” said Klijnsma. “We must therefore ensure that children get the things they need to grow up.”

Employees of the RCN Unit of Social Affairs and of the Ministry of Social Affairs can assist organisations with the preparation of applications. They will be present on the islands in May to help where necessary. Information meetings will be organised on all three islands in the near future.
